In publishing, managing derivatives (alternate versions of a song) efficiently helps minimise redundant data and better aligns your registrations with the societies. By linking derivative works to their original versions, we streamline the registration and royalty process.
A work is considered a derivative of an existing, rather than an original, if it meets the following criteria:
- It shares the same title (with a different mix name or version)
- It has the same writers/licensor(s)
- The writers/licensor(s) have the same ownership rate
Please note: Only one ISWC will be assigned between original works and their derivatives. For accounting purposes, they must share the same contracts within ampsuite.
If the work is a derivative of another work already in your system, simply select the original work from the dropdown menu to link them:
In this case, only the original version of the work (the ‘parent’ work) will be assigned to the contract. All derivative versions will be linked to the parent, and only the parent work will need to be registered.
Note: The system will not run a check to see if the new work matches a pre-existing work. If you attempt to create a new derivative work by selecting “No,” you may see a pop-up prompting you to match the work to its parent.
One two tracks are linked, you will not be able to make changes to the derivative, only the parent.
Now that your work has been created, you can begin preparing it for registration.
